The protagonists live in difficult times. The book observes in some detail more than fifty years of history, opening in the pre-war period, giving a view of the plight of the German minority that remained in Czechoslovakia after the war, proceeding to the Russian occupation of the late Sixties and the subsequent persecution, before taking in 1989’s Velvet Revolution and beyond.

Autor vypráví příběhy několika generací své rodiny a sleduje tak poměrně podrobně více jak padesát let českého poválečného vývoje. Počínaje dnes hodně diskutovanou situací německé menšiny, která zůstala v poválečném Československu, ruskou okupací na konci šedesátých let a následnou perzekucí, dostává se až k Sametové revoluci v roce 1989 a za ni.
Kniha Steiner aneb Co jsme dělali se dočkala výtečného přijetí čtenáři i kritiky a vyšla v češtině již ve dvou vydáních. V německém překladu ji vydalo prestižní nakladatelství Piper, ve slovinském pak Mladinskaja Knjiga. Nyní vychází v překladu do angličtiny.
